The Work of Fellowship (2)

Jun 2, 2019    Shawn Brewer    1 Corinthians 11:23-34

Well, here we are in week two of studying the Lord’s Supper and being challenged to get the most out of participating in it. I remember as a small child growing up in First Baptist Church ____ (you name it), the mystery that existed concerning the Lord’s Supper.
As a young child, having not expressed my personal faith, I didn’t participate. I would watch, I would smell the grape juice (Welch’s, of course) and I would beg and plead for just a test. I know it’s sort of disgusting now, but after the Supper I would look for cups with a remainder of juice in them to taste when I could slip away from my family.
After I had been baptized, I got to take part in the Lord’s Supper service. I remember thinking after I was done, “What’s the big deal?” See, I hadn’t been taught. It was just something that was sort of secret and then all of a sudden, it wasn’t. But it is so much more than that. It’s not a secret. The service is something that we should, as believers, participate in openly and boldly. It’s the service where we are taught to scripturally proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. (1 Corinthians 11:26)
Paul told the church at Corinth to work at your fellowship. This morning, we are going to look at the personal part of what that looks like. As we continue, let’s prepare our hearts for what is ahead as a body of believers and work together to share the message of Christ. I am glad to be serving here with you.
